Maestros rule the night!

By Sooraj Rajmohan

Jai Ho… the new mantra for youngsters and the maestro Illayaraja’s tunes created ripples on a night under the full moon that set the ambience for a mega musical event. The SRM Music Club has been a busy lot lately. Following the success of the R.D Burman musical night last week, they put together a show in honour of two of the greatest composers our country has been blessed with, A.R Rahman and Illayaraja.  The atmosphere in front of the SRM Tech Park was charged with energy as the open air show made the campus come alive, with everyone in attendance joining in to the melodies and fast numbers belted out by the singers.
The show featured around 25 songs in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, including classics from Roja to the more recent Swades and Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. Syed Faraz’s energetic rendition of the cult classic ‘Humma’ brought the audience to their feet and Vimal Raj took the excitement to an even higher pitch with ‘Peta rap’, with audience members gladly singing along and shaking a leg with him.
Student Mentoring Director  Anuradha  Ma’am and Kala Ma’am were the guests for the event, which started at 6:15 pm and extended till past 9. Madakini Ayapilla compered the show, and kept things interesting by providing tidbits of information about the two composers.
The evening waned with peppy hits like ‘Mayya Mayya’ by Rachana and the Telugu duet ‘Amma Thalle’ performed by Ratnika and Abhay. Once night set in, the melodies took centre stage, and the show received a fitting finale with the singers coming together to perform a combined ‘Maa Tujhe Salaam’ and ‘Jai Ho’, arousing patriotic feelings in everyone present and receiving a standing ovation.
With another roaring success behind it, the Milan juggernaut rolls on, sustaining the enthusiasm of SRMites and setting the stage for more to come. .
