A Night of Splendour

By Sooraj Rajmohan

Colleges from around the city showed off their dance moves in
‘Choreonite’, the much awaited dance competition which saw tickets
selling like hot cakes in campus over the last few days. T.P. Ganesan
auditorium was a hub of activity as spectators packed the venue to
capacity to see the 13 performing teams. The stage itself was a
kaleidoscope of colour as the participating teams used bright costumes
and various props to enhance their performances.
It was a night when dancers went flying around the stage, blue painted
perfromers invoked mythological figures and angels swayed to the
strains of ‘Lux Aeterna’. Hip hop moves and popping were not far
behind, with Step Up 3 soundtracks leading the way for most
performances.
Despite intense competition, Loyola College took away top honours and
Rs. 30,000 in cash after a splendid performance that made use of masks
and the infamous lighted suits immortalized in Step Up 3. Stella Maris
College came runners up after showcasing the grace of angels in their
well coordinated maneuvers and went on to pocket a handsome cheque for
Rs. 20,000.  Third place went to Madras Christian College, who used
eye catching acrobatic moves and the slogan ‘All For One’ to bring
some fervor among the audience.
The crowd itself was mostly supportive, encouraging the dancers and
cheering as phenomenal moves were performed. Except for a few moments
when the enthusiasm was a little hard for the discipline team to curb,
the performers could not have asked for a better audience.
Following closely in the wake of Women’s Day, this edition of
Choreonite also seemed to have a women empowerment vibe to it, with
all girl teams giving the boys a run for their money. Apart from
Stella’s grace, there was also the dance team Maya displaying the
emotions of a peacock in the dance titled ‘Mayur Rang’. And that is
without mentioning those confident females who executed moonwalks and
performed headstands!
The judges for the event were upcoming dancer and television
personality Harihar Dash and freelance publicist Lekhamitra Shanmugam.
Harihar had the audience on their feet with a charged dance
performance that proved exactly why he had the likes of Kirron Kher
and Priyanka Chopra swooning over him. He said that Choreonite far
surpassed his expectations with the diversity of performances. His
judging partner Lekha was of the opinion that costume coordination is
very important in a dance performance and urged the participants to
pay special attention to this detail.
It was most definitely a night that raised the bar a little higher for
college dance competitions, and there’s more to come for dance
enthusiasts in the form of Adaptune and doubles dances. So be on the
lookout for more, because there’s always something for everyone at
this fest.
