Milan’11- celebrating Life

By Aravindan, Debleena and Abhijeet

“You are behind Vikram, even I am behind Vikram so I will speak after Vikram”, said the living legend of Carnatic  music and the Guest of Honour for the inaugural ceremony of Milan’11, Dr.Bala Murali Krishnan and swept the cheering audience off their feet as the youth of SRM University again freshly fell in love with this towering personality. The crowd went bonkers cheering and hooting when the Chief Guest Shri Ram Vikram addressed them with “Yellavukun Vannakam”, a sweet gesture of welcoming the gathered crowd. In this inaugural ceremony that unfolded, another secret that unfolded publicly for the first time was that on 9th March itself Vikarm became Dr.Vikram from merely actor Vikram. He received his doctorate in the field of Arts from the Italian University, Milan which turned out to be a sweet coincidence as on that day evening itself he came as the Chief Guest for the inaugural ceremony of the fourth edition of Milan. In the words of Anuradha Parakat, Milan is all about celebrating life and about meeting not only others but also oneself where you discover your inbuilt capabilities and qualities. She made it very clear “Unless you prove your credibility in the first two years of your college life you will not be in a position to become a leader”, a statement which was highly cheered by the young SRM students, the organizers and the convener of this cultural fest. However the act which completely stole the show was Vikram’s way of communicating with the crowd, answering their questions patiently, some of which were related to his love marriage, film and political career and cracking jokes like any normal next door guy and evading the question on his political career by saying “Neither do I know how to hold a mike and speak nor do i know how to tie a veshthi...then how can you expect me to enter politics?”. It was wonderful to see the crowd respond to his answers and the way he made each and everyone feel special by his way of addressing the youth was beyond imagination. The stage was set ablaze when he tried his voice on the song ‘Mile sur mera tumhara’, which was appreciated and welcomed in all good humour by the singer of this song himself, Dr.Bala Murali Krishnan. He ended his conversation with the audience by saying “I Love You SRM” on the request of the cultural secretary not only in Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam, and English but also in Hindi which left the crowd mesmerized, happy and all the more in love with him. Both of these eminent personalities, one a pioneer in the field of Carnatic Music and the other who had challenged one of the finest actors of Bolly wood in his film Ravana, made the crowd really celebrate life with their brief presence in the inauguration ceremony. The evening was taken forward by the students of the university giving host dance performances on Bharat Natyam classical dance style and on Bengali folk dance style depicting the culture of rural Bengal. The mood was further set when SRM Music Club gave few performances with Rohit and Aishwarya as the lead singers and with Sambit, Hari, Rohan, Chandru and Shekhar on the various accompaniments. The inaugural programme came to an end with the Vote of thanks by Anushree, Cultural Secretary. The dawn of Milan’11 has promised that the setting of the sun of this cultural fest after 3 days will once again prove that it is still the favourite event of the students of SRM University and has now gradually started spreading its wings as a National Level Cultural fest as well in its fourth edition.
